Workplace Injuries

Dr. Howard Liss treats disorders that cause pain and disability by providing consultative services and soft tissue and joint injections when needed. When medically appropriate, he makes specific referrals for diagnostic testing (lab work, imaging, electrodiagnosis), physical and occupational therapy, interventional procedures (epidurals and facet joint injections), and surgery.

Millions of workplace injuries are reported every year in the United States, some of which produce life-long effects. While it’s the responsibility of the employer to provide a safe working environment for employees, the majority of injuries occur as a result of random incidents or lack of awareness concerning body mechanics, posture and positioning.

As the most consistently reported workplace injury, overexertion encompasses injuries related to pulling, pushing, lifting, holding, carrying and throwing. Also common are injuries involving slipping, tripping and falling. Specifically, when floors are wet or when there is debris in the workplace, individuals are more at risk. In some cases, an employee may suffer a reaction-type injury, in which they slip but do not fall. Yet, in other instances, they may experience a collision injury by walking into objects such as a wall, door, table or glass window. Though surprisingly to some, other workplace injuries develop as a result of repetitive movements such as prolonged computer use and typing.

While some workplace injuries result in immediate pain and discomfort, some appear gradually, as muscles and tendons are repeatedly stressed and strained. Even so, common symptoms related to workplace injuries include: muscle pain in the back, vision problems, carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder pain and trauma to the head, knee, neck or back.

Assessment and Treatment of Workplace Injuries

While workplace injuries remain varied, physiatrists are best positioned to provide comprehensive assessment and treatment of workplace injuries, as well as education to empower employees in their recovery. With extensive training and expertise across multiple disciplines, physiatrists understand how a wide variety of conditions and injuries affect the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles and tendons. Physiatrists advise selective combinations of conservative treatment modalities to optimize patient care.
