Lumbar and Cervical Spondylosis

Dr. Howard Liss treats disorders that cause pain and disability by providing consultative services and soft tissue and joint injections when needed. When medically appropriate, he makes specific referrals for diagnostic testing (lab work, imaging, electrodiagnosis), physical and occupational therapy, interventional procedures (epidurals and facet joint injections), and surgery.

Responsible for providing motion, stability and controlling and managing equilibrium, the human spine is composed of segments, joints and intervertebral discs that serve an important functional role for every individual. Even so, these structures respond to natural wear and tear associated with aging and other changes, resulting in neck and back pain, degeneration, disc herniation, facet disease and stenosis. Medically speaking, spondylosis is simply an umbrella term describing degeneration of the spine. In essence, the intervertebral discs change, resulting in loss of moisture and thinning. While spondylosis can occur at any level, it can also occur at multiple areas of the spine at the same time.

Lumbar and cervical spondylosis may cause the following symptoms:

  • Chronic pain
  • Traveling pain
  • Muscle fatigue
  • Muscle weakness
  • Soreness
  • Stiffness
  • Changes in sensation (numbness and tingling in hands or feet)
  • Sciatica (particularly with lumbar spondylosis)

Non-Surgical Treatment for Lumbar and Cervical Spondylosis

Perhaps the greatest methodology for treating lumbar and cervical spondylosis is a combination of non-surgical treatments. These treatments focus on pain relief and increased functioning while providing pertinent diagnostic information.

Specific treatment may center on physical therapy and might incorporate the use of anti-inflammatory medication, muscle relaxers or epidural steroid injections. While these treatments are not a cure-all, they provide patients with the tolerance needed to engage in rehabilitation such as exercise and massage. In turn, heat and ice applications prove helpful, and in many cases, patients are counseled in body mechanics and activities to reduce the symptoms of lumbar and cervical spondylosis.

At the Howard Liss, M.D. Rehabilitation Institute, patients can rely on Dr. Liss to put together the right treatment, therapy and rehabilitation plan to ensure the most optimal outcome. Dr. Liss works closely with other specialists required to rehabilitate patients suffering from chronic pain or serious injuries, and Dr. Liss will refer patients as needed to ensure appropriate treatment. With extensive education and exposure to a variety of conditions that affect the cervical and lumbar spine, bones, nerves, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, brain, and spinal cord, Dr. Liss is uniquely positioned to help patients manage their pain and maximize their functioning.
