Interventional Spine Treatments

Dr. Howard Liss treats disorders that cause pain and disability by providing consultative services and soft tissue and joint injections when needed. When medically appropriate, he makes specific referrals for diagnostic testing (lab work, imaging, electrodiagnosis), physical and occupational therapy, interventional procedures (epidurals and facet joint injections), and surgery.

Aside from the common cold, back pain is considered the most common reason for visiting the doctor. Yet, because a number of factors can contribute to back pain, there are many reasons to seek interventional treatments over surgery. In particular, interventional spine treatments prove useful for identifying the source of a patient’s pain and developing a comprehensive treatment program.

Whether pain has become a complication from a spinal cord injury, sports injury, herniated disc, spinal tumor, scoliosis or a spine fracture, physiatrists are often the first stop when it comes to back pain. Taking a multidisciplinary approach, physiatrists may consult with a team of medical professionals, including clinicians, physical therapists and interventionists when determining interventional spine treatments. Treatments may include image-guided spinal diagnostics, facet joint injections, intradiscal therapy, radiofrequency ablation, spinal cord stimulation, ganglion impar block, neurotomy or a series of specified nerve blocks for different regions of the spine.

Non-Surgical Spine Treatments

For patients suffering from chronic or persistent back pain, it’s important to understand that a combination of non-surgical treatments not only speed up the healing process, they contribute to long-term pain relief.

A diverse mix of therapies are used such as hot and cold packs, massage, electrotherapy, injections, traction, physical therapy, medication, exercise or braces (orthotics or back braces). In turn, because physiological health is connected to psychological health, physiatrists integrate counseling into treatment whenever necessary.
